From1999to2016,Kellytookpartinfourspacemissions.HisfirstwasarepairtriptotheHubbleSpaceTelescope.Onhissecondtrip,in2007,hewasthemissioncommander.Kellyfinishedhisthirdmissionin2011.Itwasafive-monthstayontheInternationalSpaceStation(ISS).NASAwasinterestedintheideaofsendingpeopletospaceforanevenlongerperiodoftime.ThespaceagencythenchoseKellytosetoffona340-daymissiontotheISS.Thetripbecameoneofthelongesttimeeverspentinspace.

Themainpurposeofthemissionwastostudyhowthehumanbodyrespondstoalongspaceflight.Spaceweakensyourbonesandmusclesbecauseyourbodydoesn’thavetousethemmuchinlowgravity.Thatswhyastronautsworkoutforatleasttwohoursaday.Eyesightisalsogreatlyaffectedbyspacetravel.Kellysaysthathewearsglassestocorrecthisvisionbecauseofhistimespentinspace.

There’sstillalottolearnabouttheeffectsofspaceflightsonthebody.Andthere’salwaysworktobedoneinspace.Themorepeoplewhogetinterestedinspace,themorestepswecantaketowardapossiblemoonbase,orevenaMarsbase.
