Panicspreadthroughtheclassroomaseveryonerealizedwhatwashappening.Ourteacher,Mrs.Smith,wasquicktoreact.Sheshoutedforustogetunderourdesksandprotectourheads.Weobeyedimmediately,huddledtogetherinfear.Theshakingseemedtolastforaneternity,butinreality,itwasprobablyonlyafewminutes.

Aftertheshakingstopped,weemergedfromourhidingplaces,shakenanddazed.Theschoolhadbeenevacuated,andwefoundourselvesstandingoutsideintheplayground,surroundedbyourclassmatesandteachers.Everyonewastalkinganxiously,tryingtomakesenseofwhathadhappened.

Later,welearnedthattheearthquakehadcausedsignificantdamagetoourcity.Buildingshadcollapsed,roadshadbeenblocked,andpowerlinesweredown.Itwasashockingrealizationthatsuchapowerfulforceofnaturecoulddestroyourfamiliarsurroundingsinaninstant.

Intheaftermathoftheearthquake,ourschoolorganizedreliefefforts.Wecollecteddonationsforthosewhohadlosttheirhomesandbelongings.Wealsoparticipatedinvolunteerwork,helpingtocleardebrisandrestoresomeofthedamagedareas.
