theaveragehumanwillconsume70poundsofcorneachandeveryyear!Thatsawhole
lotofcornthatneedstobegrowneachyear,andthatsnotevenaccountingforcorn
beinggrownforanimalconsumptionandbiofuel.Justlikemanyotherpopularfoods,
farmersarefindingitdifficulttokeepupwithallthatdemand.
Ofcourse,complicatingmattersisthefactthatcornisatropicalplant,meaning
itisverysensitivetocoldweatherandthusfarmersareunabletoproduceitduring
thecoldermonthsoftheyearinmoretemperateclimates.Now,researchersfromCornell
UniversitysBoyceThompsonInstitutehavedevelopedtheirownsolution:anew
variationofcornthatrecoversmuchmorequicklyafterbeingexposedtocold
temperatures.
Ifthisnewvariationofcornprovestobeviable,itcouldrevolutionizeand
increaseglobalproduction,allowingmoreareastogrowcorn,andfarmerstoproduce
greaterquantities.

temperaturescombinewithstrongsunlight,causingplantstobleach，”commentslead
researcherDavidStern,presidentoftheBoyceThompsonInstitute,inarelease.“So
amorechillingtolerantcorncouldhelpfarmersplantearlierintheyearwith
confidencethattheircropwouldsurviveacoldspellandbouncebackquicklyonce
theweatherwarmedupagain.”
