Itwas2:30a.m.onOctober3,2011,andIwasathome,inmysmallcondominiuminSanDiego,CA.Iwassleepless,havingrecentlyreturnedfromatriptoHongKong.ThereIhadsharedtheShawPrizeinLifeSciences:oneofaseriesofprizesinrecentyears.Thepreviousafternoon,aswevisitedourmotherinLaJolla,mybrotherEarlhadremarkedthattheNobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicinewouldbeannouncedthenextday.HealsohadaskedifIwasgoingtowinitthisyear.ThiswasonmymindasIlayawake.
