ABSTRACT

Thispaperestimatesthatthemacroeconomicdamagesfromclimatechangearesixtimeslargerthanpreviouslythought.Weexploitnaturalvariabilityinglobaltemperatureandrelyontime-seriesvariation.A1°Cincreaseinglobaltemperatureleadstoa12%declineinworldGDP.Globaltemperatureshockscorrelatemuchmorestronglywithextremeclimaticeventsthanthecountry-leveltemperatureshockscommonlyusedinthepanelliterature,explainingwhyourestimateissubstantiallylarger.Weuseourreduced-formevidencetoestimatestructuraldamagefunctionsinastandardneoclassicalgrowthmodel.OurresultsimplyaSocialCostofCarbonof$1,056pertonofcarbondioxide.Abusiness-as-usualwarmingscenarioleadstoapresentvaluewelfarelossof31%.Botharemultipleordersofmagnitudeabovepreviousestimatesandimplythatunila
