Abstract
Purpose:ThisisthefrstofthreepartsoftheclinicalpracticeguidelinefromtheEuropeanSocietyofIntensiveCare
Medicine(ESICM)onresuscitationfuidsinadultcriticallyillpatients.Thispartaddressesfuidchoiceandtheother
twowillseparatelyaddressfuidamountandfuidremoval.
Methods:Thisguidelinewasformulatedbyaninternationalpanelofclinicalexpertsandmethodologists.TheGrad‑
ingofRecommendationsAssessment,Development,andEvaluation(GRADE)methodologywasappliedtoevaluate
thecertaintyofevidenceandtomovefromevidencetodecision.
Results:Forvolumeexpansion,theguidelineprovidesconditionalrecommendationsforusingcrystalloidsrather
thanalbuminincriticallyillpatientsingeneral(moderatecertaintyofevidence),inpatientswithsepsis(moderate
certaintyofevidence),inpatientswithacuterespiratoryfailure(verylowcertaintyofevidence)andinpatientsinthe
perioperativeperiodandpatientsatriskforbleeding(verylowcertaintyofevidence).Thereisaconditionalrecom‑
