1.Simple
Sentences
A
simple
sentence
has
one
subject‐verb
pair.
The
subject
ls
who
or
what
did
something.
The
verb
ls
the
action
(work,
talk,
think,
etc.)
or
condition
(is,
seem,
appear,
etc.).
A
simple
sentence
can
have
one
of
several
possible
“formulas.”
Here
are
four
possibilities.
The
subject(s)
in
each
sentence
are
underlined,
and
the
verb(s)
are
in
the
box.
a.The
climate
in
the
continental
United
States
is
also
one
of
great
extremes.

b.The
South
and
Southwest
of
United
States
have
warmer
weather.

c.Americans
travel
and
hike
a
lot.

d.American
and
Canadians
often
sell
and
buy
the
same

Notice
that
the
subject
in
a
simple
sentence
may
have
two
or
more
items
(as
in
b
and
d),
and
the
verbs
may
also
have
two
or
more
items
(as
in
c
and
d).
These
are
all
simple
sentences
because
there
is
only
one
subject‐verb
pair.
2.Compound
Sentences
A
compound
sentence
has
two
subject‐verb
pairs.
A
compound
sentence
is
composed
of
at
least
two
simple
sentences
joined
by
a
coordinating
conjunction
(FANBOYS
=
For,
And,
Nor,
But,
Or,
Yet,
So).
Americans
are
restless,
and
most
Americans
travel
often.

Use
a
comma
before
a
coordinating
conjunction
in
a
compound
sentence.
There
are
seven
coordinating
conjunctions
but
we
will
study
the
most
commonly
use
ones:
and,
but,
or,
and
so.
