Toppingthelististheprevailinguseofcomputerstohandleourdailypaperwork.Sincemanywordprocessingsoftwaresarebecomingincreasinglypowerfultocorrectalmostallspellingmistakes,wetendtoneglecttheexactspellingofmanywords.Besides,somepeopleholdthenotionthataslongasoneisabletocommunicateinEnglish,itisnotatallimportantwhetherhecanspellthewordheusesornot.Lastbutnotleast,ourexamsdonottestspellingssomuchastheyusedto,shiftingstudents’attentiontootheraspectsofEnglishacquisition.
Therefore,inordertochangethesituation,studentsshouldbeencouragedtodependlessonautomaticspelling-checksoftware.Atthesametime,teachersshouldhighlighttheimportanceofcorrectspelling,which,toacertainextent,indicatesthedegreeofEnglishlevel.
