Abstract

1.Background:Healthofficialsfaceparticularchallengesincommunicatingwiththe

publicaboutemerginginfectiousdiseasesofunknownseveritysuchasthe2009

H1N1(swine‘flu)pandemic(pH1N1).Statementsintendedtocreateawarenessand

conveytheseriousnessofinfectiousdiseasethreatscandrawaccusationsof

scaremongering,whileofficialscanbeaccusedofcomplacencyifsuchstatementsare

notmade.Inthesecommunicationcontexts,newsjournalists,oftenreliantonofficial

sourcestounderstandissuesarepivotalinselectingandemphasisingaspectsof

officialdiscoursedeemedsufficientlynewsworthytopresenttothepublic.Thispaper

presentsacase-studyofnewscommunicationregardingtheemergenceofpH1N1.

2.Methods:Weconductedacontentanalysisofalltelevisionnewsitemsabout

pH1N1.Weexaminednewsandcurrentaffairsitemsbroadcaston5free-to-air

SydneytelevisionchannelsbetweenApril252009(thefirstreport)andOctober9

(priortothevaccinerelease)forstatementsabouttheseriousnessofthediseasehow

thepubliccouldminimisecontagiongovernmentresponsestoemerging

information.

3.Results:pH1N1wastheleadinghealthstoryforeightof24weeksandwasinthe

top5for20weeks.353newsitemswereidentified,yielding3086statementsfor

analysis,with63.4%relatedtotheseriousnessofthesituation,12.9%providing

adviceforviewersand23.6%involvingassurancesfromgovernment.Coverage

focusedoninfection/mortalityrates,thespreadofthevirus,theneedforpubliccalm,

thevulnerabilityofparticulargroups,directandindirect
