PXELINUXisaSYSLINUXderivative,forbootingLinuxoffanetworkserver,usinganetworkROMconformingtotheIntelPXE(Pre-ExecutionEnvironment)specification. PXELINUXis*not*aprogramthatisintendedtobeflashedorburnedintoaPROMonthenetworkcard;ifyouwantthat,checkoutEtherboot(/).

Etherboot5.4orlatercanalsobeusedtocreateaPXE-compliantbootPROMformanynetworkcards.

PXELINUXoperatesinmanywayslikeSYSLINUX. IfyouarenotfamiliarwithSYSLINUX,readsyslinux.docfirst,sincethisdocumentationonlyexplainsthedifferences.

OntheTFTPserver,createthedirectory/tftpboot,andcopythefollowingfilestoit:

pxelinux.0 -fromtheSYSLINUXdistributionanykernelorinitrdimagesyouwanttoboot

Finally,createthedirectory/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg. Theconfigurationfile(equivalentofsyslinux.cfg--seesyslinux.docfortheoptionshere)willliveinthisdirectory. Becausemorethanonesystemmaybebootedfromthesameserver,theconfigurationfilenamedependsontheIPaddressofthebootingmachine. PXELINUXwillsearchforitsconfigfileonthebootserverinthefollowingway:

First,itwillsearchfortheconfigfileusingthehardwaretype(usingitsARPtypecode)andaddress,allinlowercasehexadecimal

withdashseparators;forexample,foranEthernet(ARPtype1)withaddress88:99:AA:BB:CC:DDitwouldsearchforthefilename01-88-99-aa-bb-cc-dd.
