Soitsinterestingtonotethattheuseofrecordedsoundwasoriginallycontroversial

FEMALESTUDENT:Whataboutallthesoundsyouhearinsomesilentmovies?Like,

youknowaloudsoundwhensomebodyfallsdownorsomething?

MALEPROFESSOR:OK,youretalkingaboutasoundtrackaddedmuchlater,which

has,overtime,becomepartofthefilmweknow.Butthisrecordedtrackdidntexist

then.

Anditsnotthatmostpeopledidntwantsoundinfilms;itsjustthatthetechnology

wasntavailableyet.Dontforgetthatinsteadofrecordedsoundtherewasoftenlive

musicthataccompaniedmoviesinthosedays—likeapianoplayeroralarger

orchestrainthemovietheater.

Also,thinkofthestage,thelivetheater—ithasusedwonderfulsoundeffectsfora

longtimeand,ifwanted,thesecouldbeproducedduringtheviewingofafilm.You

know,therollingofdrumsforthunderorwhatever.Butthatwasntascommon.

Oh,andanotherthingthattheymighthaveinmovietheatersintheearlydayswasa

groupofliveactorsreadingthepartstogoalongwiththefilm.Or—andthisseemsa

particularlybadideatousnow—onepersonnarratingtheaction…anearlyexample

ofalongtraditionofmovieproducers—theonesconcernedmostlyaboutmaking

money—nothavingmuchconfidenceintheiraudience,thinkingthatpeople

somehowcouldn’tfollowtheeventsotherwise.

So,itfinallybecamepossibletoplayrecordedsoundaspartofthefi
