writerwrotethenovelinonlyeightweeks,basingononeofhisfriend’
strueexperience.Hecreatedthefigureoftheoldmanwhichwaslater
calledbypeople“toughman”andshowedhislifeattitudeandspiritual
world.Themostwell-knownsentenceofthisnovelandalsothetopicof
itisthat:“manisnotmadefordefeat.Amancanbedestroyedbutnot
defeated.”Thesewordsbecomebeliefofmanyreaders.
Inmyopinion,thewholestoryisaboutabattlebetweenanoldman
andthesea,bothofwhichareconsideredtohavesymbolicmeanings
accordingtocritics.Theoldmanoncewassoenergeticandstrongbut
couldn’tgetharvestfromthesea.Heusedhisoldbodyandstrongmind
tofightagainstnatureandchallengehisfate.Hedidwinabit—hegot
thelargefish,buthelosttotallybecausehecarriedbackonlythe
skeletonof
thefishwithhishandsbleeding.Ontheotherhand,hehaddoneall
hecouldtofightagainstallunluckythingsanddidn’tlosehisface.
