capturingcreaturesalongtheseabottom-atahundredlocations,atdepths

rangingfrom6to1380feet.Hecollectedhundredsofdifferentspeciesofanimals,

andhesawthattheyweredistributedineightdifferentdepthzones,each

containingitsowndistinctassemblageofanimallife,thewayzonesofelevationon

thesideofamountainarepopulatedbydistinctsetsofplants.
