TheOlympicflamewillilluminatetheCityofLightfromJuly26th,whentheworld’sgreatestsportingspectaclegetsunderwayinParis.AlthoughFrancestilllacksagovernmentafterasnapnationalparliamentaryvoteinrecentweeks,itscapitalwillhostthe33rdOlympiadinstyle.DressageeventswilltakeplaceinthemagnificentgroundsofVersailles;volleyballswillwhizzovernetsbytheEiffelTower.OrganisershopetoshowthebestofFrancetovisitingsportsfans,businessexecutivesandforeignpoliticians.Oneofthethousandsofvolunteersinvolveddescribes“aninfectiouspositiveenergy”.

Notalllocalsaresoenthused,however.SecurityistightoverterrorismfearsandmuchofcentralParishasbeenzonedoff.Restaurantsandotherbusinessesintheseareasareemptierthannormalandbookingsattheposhesthotelsweredownbetween20%and50%inJuly,accordingtoUMIHPrestige,whichrepresentsthem.Overall,44%ofParisiansconsiderthegamestobea“badthing”,accordingtorecentpolling;50%saidtheywouldconsiderleavingthecitytoescapethem.Iwantthiseventtobeamazing,explainsPaulHatte,aParisiancouncillorwhorepresentsthecity’s17tharrondissement,“butitfeelsmorelikeitwillbeaninternationalpartyinPariswithouttheParisians.”

SuchresponsesarehardlyunusualinanOlympichostcity;noonelikesdisruption.ButtheParisgamesarestirringupotherwell-wornconcerns,too:Ishostingthegamesreallyworthit?Needtheybeanenvironmentalcalamity?Andwhatofthetrickypoliticaldecisionsaroundparticipationandprotest?

2024年巴黎奥运会开幕式于当地时间7月26日19时30分（北京时间7月27日1时30分）在法国巴黎举行，这是奥运会史上首次开放式开幕式。
