OnereasonisthatAmericansviewbusinessasbeingmorefirmly

basedontheidealofcompetitionthanotherinstitutionsinsociety.

Sincecompetitionisseenasthemajorsourceofprogressand

prosperitybymostAmericans,competitivebusinessinstitutionsare

respected.Competitionisnotonlygoodinitself,

itisthemeansbywhichotherbasicAmericanvaluessuchas

individualfreedom,equalityofopportunity,andhardworkare

protected.

Competitionprotectsthefreedomoftheindividualbyensuringthat

thereisnomonopoly(垄断)ofpower.Incontrasttoone,all-powerful

government,manybusinessescompeteagainsteachotherforprofits.

Theoretically,ifonebusinesstriestotakeunfairadvantageofits

customers,itwilllosetocompetingbusinesswhichtreatsitscustomers

morefairly.Wheremanybusinessescompeteforthecustomersdollar,

theycannotaffordtotreatthemlikeinferiorsorslaves.
