Miraculously,shesurvived.Butthreeyearslater,Rutnamstillfeelstheeffectsofthatday.Shehasnotbeenabletofinishcollegeandissuingherformerschoolformalpractice.Hersuitassertsthat,giventhecampuscounselorsadvice,schoolofficialsshouldhavedonemoretopreventhersuicideattempt.

Thisincidentandothershavethrownaspotlightonanissuethatiscausinggrowingconcernindormroomsandstudentscenter.Arecollegesprovidingadequatecareforstudentswhomaybestrugglingwitharangeofmentalillnesses?IntheSyracusecases,aspokesmanfortheschoolcontends,TheUniversitytriedrepeatedlytohelpAnita,andwefeltthattheyactedappropriately.Butlawyersarebusythereandelsewhere.

Afteraccidents,suicideisthesecondbiggestkillerofkidsincollege.Andwhilethenumberofstudentswhokillthemselvesoncampusisnohigherthanthatof18-to-24-year-oldsinthegeneralpopulation,aseriesofsensationalincidentshasraisedthequestionofwhethertroubledstudentsaregettingproperattention.
