Whyisstorytellingsuchanimportantpartofeverytradition?MarcusGarveysaid,“Apeoplewithouttheknowledgeoftheirpasthistory,originandcultureislikeatreewithoutroots.”Ourknowledgeofourfamilyandgroupidentityhelpsusgrow.Whoweareasindividualsintheworldisrootedinourhistories,andknowingthesehistoriesprovidesuswithstrengthandflexibility.Beingpartofaculturalgroupandparticipatinginthepassing-onofstoriesishighlybeneficialforadolescents.

MichaelChandlerandhiscolleagues,researchpsychologistsatUniversityofBritishColumbia,havebeenstudyingFirstNationgroupsinwesternCanada.Likemanyfirstnationpeoples,thesegroupshavebeentornfrommuchoftheirtraditionalculture,includingtheirlanguage,andthereforetheirstories.Adolescentsintheseculturesareathighrisk.Self-harmistoofrequent;insomegroups,itisupto800timesthenationallevel.Yetforthosegroupsthathavemanagedtopreservetheirculturalstoriesandcontinuetodostorytelling,adolescentriskisnohigherthanthenationalaverage.LikethestoryoftheJewishpeopleescapingslavery,thesestoriesareaboutovercominggreatdifficultiesandsurvivingasapeople.Thepoweroffamilystorytellinggivesushopeforthefuture.
