Thepandas,onemaleandonefemale,arenamedBaoLiandQingBoa,respectively,andtheyareexpectedtoarriveatthefacilityonTuesday.Bornonemonthapartin2021,theyvebeendescribedbypriorcaregiversaslively3-year-oldswhoenjoyclimbing.

BaoLiisadescendantofBaoBao,whowasborninD.C.in2013andlivedtherethrough2017.AllgiantpandasbornattheNationalZooreturntoChinaat4yearsoldaspartofabreedingprogramthathelpsprotectthelongevityofthespecies,whichiscurrentlydeemedvulnerablebytheInternationalUnionforConservationofNature.

Theiroffspringmaybeabletocarryontheirdiplomaticlegacy--asinthecaseofBaoLi--andinsomecasestheycanevenbereintroducedtothewild,accordingtotheNationalZoo.

Inordertopreparefortheofficialtransferofthetwogiantpandas,ChineseexpertsmadeseveraltripstoD.C.toensurethattheirsafetyandwell-beingwouldbeprovidedfor,accordingtotheXinhuaNewsAgency.ExpertsdeterminedthattheNationalZooslivingspaces,foodsources,breedingprogramandhealthmonitoringweresufficient,thestatementsaid;theyalsoensuredthatthepandaswouldhaveadequateclimbingfacilities.
