Gertyandherhusband,CarlCori,movedtotheUnitedStatesin1922,wherethetwomedicaldoctorsworkedtogetheratRoswellParkCancerCenterInstituteinNewYork,hopingtofindthecurefordiabetes.In1947,Gerty,CarlandtheArgentinedoctorBernardowereawardedtheNobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicine,makingGertythefirstwomantoholdthehonor.

Bornin1906inGermany,MariaGoeppert-MayermovedtotheUSwithherhusbandJosephEdwardMayer,achemist,in1930.WhileintheUS,Goeppert-Mayerdevelopedthenuclearshellmodel,forwhichshesharedthe1963NobelPrizeinPhysicswithJohannesHansDanielJensenandEugenePaulWigner.Shewasthefirstwomantoreceivetheawardin60years.

DorothyHodgkinshowedaloveforscienceasachildandatage18,shebeganstudyingchemistryatawomen-onlyOxfordcollege.SheenteredherPhDattheUniversityofCambridge,whereshefirsttookaninterestinX-raycrystallographyandbeganstudyingthestructureofproteins.In1934,shemovedbacktoOxford,whereshewasappointedtheuniversity’sfirstresearchchemistryfellow.HerworkonmappingvitaminB12earnedhertheNobelPrizeinchemistryin1964.
