Hydrogenisachemicalmoleculewhichbondstwohydrogenatoms

together,anditcanbeabundantlyfoundinwater,naturalgases,

plants,animals,andoil,butalwaysformpartsofothercompounds.

Innature,Hydrogenexistsasacolourlessandodourlessgas,

andpossesseshighenergycontent.

So,whyiseverybodytalkingabouthydrogen,andhowcanwetake

advantageofitscharacteristicstosignificantlybenefittechnology

andsociety,includingtacklingglobalwarming?

OPPORTUNITIES

Whenhydrogenburns,itproduceszerocarbonemissions.Ifwecandecarbonise

manytraditionalprocessesortechnologiesbyusinghydrogeninstead,orproduce

hydrogenfrommethodsthatarenotcarbon-intensive,thencontributionsto

greenhousegasemissionscanbesignificantlyreduced.Thatiswhyhydrogen

energyisbeingviewedasincreasinglyimportantinthefightagainstthe

climatecrisis.

Inadditiontodecarbonisation,anothermajoropportunitythatmayberealised

throughutilisinghydrogenisthatduetoitsabundantexistenceinnature,the

relianceonoverseascommoditiesrequiredforenergy(e.g.naturalgas,oil)is

lessened,andcountriesmaybeabletobetterutilisedomesticenergysources.

Thisshouldgosomewaytopreventingthedestabilisingenergycrisescausedby

eventssuchastheRussianinvasionofUkraine,withcountriesmovingtowards

beingmorereliantontheirownpowersources.
