Likemanycreatures,humpbackwhalesmigratelongdistancesforfeedingand

matingpurposes.Howanimalsmanagetomigratelongdistancesisoftenpuzzling.

Inthecaseofhumpbackwhales,wemayhavefoundtheanswer:theymaybe

navigatingbythestars,muchasearlyhumansailorsdid.Whatweknowabout

humpbackwhalesmakesthisadistinctpossibility.

First,humpbackwhalesseemtobeintelligentenoughtousestarsto

navigateby.Whalesbrainshaveahighdegreeofcomplexity--acommon

determinerofintelligence.Thissuggeststhatthewhalesbrainpowerfar

exceedsthatofmostotheranimals.Thewhaleswell-developedcognitiveability

seemstoprovideasoundbasisfortheabilitytouseacomplex,abstractsystem

ofsensorystimulisuchasthenightskyfororientation.

Second,humpbackwhalesmigrateinstraightlines.Animalscanmaintain

movementinastraightdirectionforlongdistancesonlyiftheyorient

themselvesbysomeexternalobjectsorforces.Manybirdsandotherterrestrial

creatures,forexample,usephysicallandmarkstohelpthemstayontrackas

theymigrate.Whales,whichswimintheopenocean,cannotrelyonland

features;theycould,however,relyonstarsatnighttoprovidethemwith

externalsignsbywhichtomaintaindirectionoverlongdistances.

Third,humpbackwhalesexhibitanunusualbehavior:theyaresometimes

observedfloatingstraightupforminutesatatime,theirheadsabovethewater

asthoughtheywerelookingupward.Thebehaviorisknownasspy-hopping,andit

isveryrareamongmarineanimals.Oneexplanationforthefunctionof

spy-hoppingisthatthewhalesarelookingatthestars,whichareproviding

themwithinformationtonavigateby.
