Summary

Heterosisandinbreedingdepressionforfruityieldhasbeenreportedforpicklingcucumber(Cucumissativus

L.).However,cucumberinbredsoftenperformaswellashybrids,andthereislittleinbreedingdepression.The

objectivesofthisstudyweretoreexaminetheamountofheterosisandinbreedingdepressionforfruityieldand

yieldcomponentsinpicklingcucumber,andtodeterminetherelationshipbetweenyieldcomponentsandyield

forheterosis.Twopicklingcucumberinbreds(M12,M20)andinbredsfromfouropen-pollinatedmonoecious

cultivars(‘Addis’,‘Clinton’,‘WisconsinSMR18’,‘TinyDill’)werehybridizedtoformfourF1hybrids(‘Addis’

M20,‘Addis’‘Wis.SMR18’,‘Clinton’M12,M20‘TinyDill’).F1hybridswerethenself-pollinated

orbackcrossedtogenerateF,BC,andBCprogeny.Thirtyplantsofeachgenerationwithineachhybrid

familyweregrowninplots3.1mlongwithfourreplicationsineachoftwoseasons.Datawerecollectedfrom

once-overharvestforvegetative,reproductive,yield,andfruitqualitytraits.Heterosisandinbreedingdepression

forfruityieldandyieldcomponentswerenotobservedinthreeofthehybrids.Only‘Addis’‘Wis.SMR18’

exhibitedhigh-parentheterosisandinbreedingdepressionfortotal,marketable,andearlyfruitweight.For‘Addis’

‘Wis.SMR18’,heterosisforfruityieldwasassociatedwithadecreasedcorrelationbetweenpercentageof

fruitsetandfruitweight,anincreasednegativecorrelationbetweenpercentageoffruitsetandboththenumber
