aswater-solubleoilsorwater-basedtypes:directandindirect.Inadirectemulsion,mineraloilis
dispersedinwaterintheformofverysmalldroplets.Inanindirectemulsion,waterdropletsare
dispersedintheoil.Directemulsionsareimportantmetalworkingfluids,becausethepresenceof
watergivesthemhighcoolingcapacity.Theyareeffectiveparticularlyinhigh-speedmachining
wheretemperaturerisehasdetrimentaleffectsontoollife,thesurfaceintegrityofworkpiece,and
thedimensionalaccuracyofparts.
Syntheticsolutionsarechemicalfluidsthatcontaininorganicandotherchemicalsdissolved
inwater;theydonotcontainanymineraloils.Variouschemicalagentsareaddedtoaparticular
solutiontoimpartdifferentproperties.Semisyntheticssolutionsarebasicallysyntheticsolutionsto
