Somedesignadvantages
Hydrostaticoperationofvehiclessuchasdozersandloadersimplies
useofinenginetooperateahydraulicpumporpumps.Highpressure
hosesareusedtotransmitthefluidpressureandflowtoseparatedrive
motorswhichcanbelocatedsomedistancefromengineandpump.The
enginecanberunatitsmostefficientconditionswithareversible,
variableswashplatepump.Thehydraulicmotorscanalsomakeuseof
variableswashplates,simplifyingbothhydraulicdesigns.Onlythe
designadvantagesofsuchasystemarecoveredhere,thoughservice
procedures,lifeexpectancy,andoperatorsallcanbenefitfromother
aspectsofsuchdrives.
Amajordesignobjectiveintheconstructionequipment
manufacturingbusinesssincethe1960shasbeenmoreefficientuseof
installedhorsepower.Lowefficiencymeansenergywastedasheatwhich,
initsturn,usuallyrequiresextrapowertodrivefansandmaintain
temperature.Themoreinefficientthemachine,thehotteritgets,soheat
servesasameasuringscaleforoverallefficiency.

andspeed(gal/mm).Forpurposesofcomparingdifferentsystemsone
canusetheexpression:
