FOREWORD
Millionsoftonnesofsolidbulkcargoesareshippedeveryyearacrosstheworld’soceans.
Whilethevastmajorityoftheseshipmentsaremadewithoutincident,therehave
unfortunatelybeenseriouscasualtiesthatresultednotonlyinthelossofships,butalsoin
lossoflife.
ThisrevisedCodeisintendedtosetastandardforthesafestowageandcarriageofsolid
bulkcargoes,excludinggrainwhichisdealtwithundertheGrainCargoRegulations.It
supersedestheCanadianCodeofSafePracticeforSolidBulkCargoes1984,andhereby
incorporatesalltherecommendationscontainedinthelatesteditionoftheInternational
Maritimeorganization(IMO)CodeofSafePracticeforSolidBulkCargoesBC
Code,togetherwithspecificCanadianrequirementsespeciallyasregardsconcentrates.
ThisrevisedCodeisarecommendedguideforshipowners,shippersandmastersand
shallapplytoallshipmentsofbulkcargoestowhichtherelevantsectionsoftheCanada
ShippingActapply,aswellastheActrespectingtheofficesofPortWardensinQuebec.It
setsthestandardsof“approvedpractice”and“properstowage’asenvisagedbythese
Acts.
ThelistofproductsappearingintheAppendicesoftheBCCode,however,isbynomeans
exhaustive.Consequently,beforeanybulkcargoisloaded,itisessentialtoascertain
(normallyfromtheshipper)thecurrentphysicalandchemicalpropertiesofthecargo,thisis
alsonowrequiredinIMOSOLASChapterVI.
ThisrevisedcodehasbeenpreparedtobeusedinconjunctionwiththeIMOBCCode,in
ordertoavoidduplicationwherepossible,andtofacilitateitsusebyindustry.Thematerial
containedintheaddendum,althoughnotconsideredpartofthisCode,hasbeenincluded
forreferenceaswellfortheabovereason.
