Reading1Academicexploration12Thedistributionoflanguagediversityvariesgreatlyacrosstheworld.Forexample,therearejustover200languagesspokeninEurope,butaround2,000inAsia.Someplaceshaveanespeciallyhighrangeoflocallanguages.Forexample,PapuaNewGuineaisoneofthemostlinguisticallydiversecountriesintheworld,withover800languages.Theproblemoccurswhenfewerandfewerpeoplespeakalanguage.InNorthAmerica,forexample,thereareover150languages.However,aroundhalfofthesearespokenbyonlyasmallnumberofpeople.Infact,around25%oftheworld’slanguagesareinasimilarsituation.Somearguethatlanguagesaredisappearingasfastasmanyspeciesofanimal.Languages,though,unlikeanimals,arenotdependentonsurvivinginaparticularenvironment,sowhyaresomanydisappearing?
