IntroductionandPurpose

Frequently,clinicalandotherstaffmembersaretappedtofillroleswithnewresponsibilities.For

example,anurseorclinicalpersonwithastronglaboratoryorsciencebackgroundisaskedtobecome

theinfectionpreventionandcontrolprofessional(a.k.a.infectionpreventionist[IP]).Arolechangeor

additionofthisnaturerequiresapersontoidentifyastartingpointtolearnnewperspectives,practices,

andwheretolocatethebodyofknowledgeforthenewdiscipline.TheWyomingInfectionPrevention

OrientationManual(WYIPOM)wasdevelopedforthepersonaskedtofilltheinfectionpreventionand

controlroleforhis/herfacility.ItisalsofortheIPwhomaybenewtothestateofWyomingandisin

needofsomedirectionandlocalresources.

Theintentofthemanualissimplytoidentifyknowledgeneededtoanswerthequestions,“WheredoI

start?”and“WhatareadditionalresourcesonceI’mcomfortablewiththebasics?”Thismanual

answersthequestionofwheretostartwithkeydefinitions,conceptsandinitialactionstotake.The

generalpurposeofthemanualistoprovidetoolstobroadenanIP’sknowledg
