Readtheintroductionbelow,andcompletethetask.WhosWashingtonIrving?WashingtonIrvingwasanAmericanwriter.HewasbornonApril30th,1783,inNewYork.Asayoungman,hestudiedlawandheworkedinseverallawcompanies.Butfrom1802,healsowrotestoriesandessays.Atfirst,thesewerepublishedinnewspapers,butlatertheywerecollectedtogetherandpublishedinbooks.Duringtheyears1803-1806,IrvingtravelledinEurope.HelefttheUnitedStatesagainin1815,andhelivedinEuropeformanyyears.Atfirst,heworkedinacompanywhichwasownedbyhistwobrothers,inLiverpool,inEngland.Elevenyearslater,hewenttoliveinMadrid,inSpain.HeworkedfortheUnitedStatesgovernmentthere.Afterthat,hereturnedtoEnglandforseveralyears,andin1832,hewentbacktotheUnitedStates.Hisbookswerenowverypopularthere.Duringtheyears1842-1846,IrvingworkedinMadridagain.Thistime,hehadamoreimportantgovernmentjob.ThenhereturnedforthelasttimetotheU.S.helivedinabeautifulhouseinTarryTown,nearNewYork,untilhisdeathin1859.IrvingwasthefirstgreatAmericanwriterofhumorousstories.Healsowrotebooksaboutthecountrieswhichhevisited,andabookaboutthelifeofGeorgeWashington—thefirstU.S.president.TheLegendofRipVanWinklefirstappearedinTheSketchBook,Irvingsmostpopularbook,whichwaspublishedin1820.
