Bumblebeesarealreadyknowntosufferfromclimatechange.So,aninsectecologistfromtheUniversityofWürzburginGermanyandherteamwantedtounderstandifheatwavescouldinfluencebumblebees’abilitytosmellflowers.
Theresearchersputaround190bumblebeesfromtwocommonspeciesintosmallspecialroomsforalmostthreehoursattemperaturesof40°Ctosimulate(模拟)heatwaves.Somebumblebeeswerealsoputinadryenvironment;somehadwaystosugaryresources;someweregiventimetorecoveratnormaltemperaturesfor24hoursaftertheheattreatment.Afterthesimulatedheatwaves,theresearcherscutoffthebumblebees’antennae(触须),whichtheyusetosmell,andmeasuredwhethertheolfactorysensoryneurons(thecellsthathelpthemsmell)intheantennaecouldstilldetectflowerscents.
Theheatwavesreducedthebumblebees’abilitytosmellbyupto80percent.Workerbumblebees,whichareallfemale,weremoreaffectedthanmalebumblebees.Evenworse,theantennaeofthebumblebeesthathad24hourstocooloffstilldidn’trecovertheirsenseofsmellafterthattime.“Thatwassurprising,”saidtheinsectecologist.Thissuggeststhebumblebeesdon’trecoverquickly,whichmeanstheymighthavetroublefindingfood.“Itcouldbeonereasonwhyweseesomanybumblebee’spopulationdrops,”sheadded,alongwithotherfactorslikehabitatloss.
“Thestudyseemsprettyreliable,”saidabumblebeeecologistfromtheUniversityofSussexinBrighton,England,whodidn’ttakepartinthestudy.“Theantennaearequitesimilaracrossbeespecies,”headded.“Ifbumblebeessufferinthisway,Ithinkit’sprobablethatotherbeeswouldtoo.
