ExercisescientistLeighGabelwaspartofateamthattracked17astronauts,eachofwhomhadspentfourtosevenmonthsinspace.Theteammeasuredthe3-Dstructureofbones.Theyfocusedonthestructureofthetibia(胫骨)andthelower-armbone.Theresearcherstookimagesofthebones3times—beforespaceflightandagainsixmonthsandoneyearlaterwhentheastronautsreturnedhomefromspace.Fromthesepictures,Gabel’steamcalculatedanastronaut’sbonestrengthanddensity(密度)ateachofthosetimes.

“Withlongerspaceflights,wecanexpectbiggerboneloss—andprobablyabiggerproblemwithrecovery,”saysphysiologistLaurenceVico.“Spaceagenciesshouldalsoconsiderotherbonehealthmeasures,suchasnutrition,toreducebonelossandincreaseboneformation.”
