Erythrosuchidaeisacladeofearlyarchosauriformreptilesthatwerelarge-bodied,hypercarnivorous,possiblyapexpred-

atorsinlateEarlyandMiddleTriassicecosystemsfollowingthePermo-Triassicmassextinction.Chalisheviacothurnata

fromthelateMiddleTriassic(Ladinian)ofRussia,isthestratigraphicallyyoungestknownerythrosuchidspecies,but

theholotypeandreferredmaterialofthistaxonhasreceivedlittlestudy.Here,weprovidethefirstdetailedanatomical

descriptionofC.cothurnata,includingcomparisonstoothererythrosuchids.Althoughknownfromrelativelyfragmen-

tarymaterial,theanatomyofC.cothurnataisdistinctive,includinganautapomorphicstronglyslantedventralborderof

theantorbitalfossa.Thepresenceofalargeaccessoryopening(the“accessoryantorbitalfenestra”)intheskullbetween

thepremaxilla,nasalandmaxilla,togetherwiththeinferredpresenceofanarrowpostnarialprocessofthepremaxilla

thatarticulatedwithaslotonthenasal,providesstrongevidenceforasistertaxonrelationshipbetweenC.cothurnata

andtheerythrosuchidShansisuchusshansisuchusfromtheearlyMiddleTriassic(Anisian)ofChina.Theinferredbasal

skulllengthofC.cothurnatawasapproximately80cm,makingitoneofthelargesterythrosuchidsknown.
