Syntheticbiologytechnologiesareﬁnallymaturing,becomingthewayalmost

anythingcanbemanufacturedcompetitivelyandsustainably.Businessmust

learntousesyn-biotodevelopnewproductsandprocesses,improveexisting

ones,andreducecoststoremaincompetitiveinthefuture.

Itmaybeaphenomenonwithoutacommonlyacceptedappellation,butsynthetic

biology—orsyn-bio,aswecallit—hasbecomeadisruptiveforcethatisbirthing

theBioEconomy.Biologyisusuallydeﬁnedasthestudyoflivingthingsandlife

itself,butsyn-biohasturnedthescienceintothemanufacturingparadigmofthe

future.Microorganismscan,intheory,makemanyofthethingsthatindustrial

processescurrentlymanufacture,sosyn-bio—thedesignandengineeringof

biologicalsystemstocreateandimproveprocessesandproducts—oﬀersnewways

ofproducingalmosteverythingthathumanbeingsconsume,fromﬂavorsand

fabricstofoodsandfuels.

Supplymightnolongerbeconstrainedbytheavailabilityofrawmaterials.

Companiescanengineerandmanufactureaninﬁnitequantityofthings,cellby

cell,fromscratch.Halfagramofcattlemusclecouldcreateasmuchas4.4billion

poundsofbeef—morethanMexicoconsumesinayear.Already,syn-biohas

spawnedanindustryofscience-basedstart-upsthataretryingtoalterconventional

productsandprocesses,transformingthematerialworldasweknowit.
