    Today,bicyclesareelegantlysimplemachinesthatarecommonaroundtheworld.

    Manypeopleridebicyclesorrecreation,whereasothersusethemasameanso

    transportation.TheirstbicyclewasinventedinGermanyin1818.Becauseitwas

    madeowood,itwasntverystrongnordidithavepedals（脚踏板）.Ridersmoved

    itbypushingtheireetagainsttheground.

    In1839,KirkpatrickMacmillan,aScottishblacksmith,inventedamuchbetter

    bicycle.Macmillansmachinehadiron-coveredwheelstokeepthemromgettingworn

    down.Healsousedoot-operatedlevers,similartopedals,sohisbicyclecould

    beriddenataquickpace.Itdidntlookmuchlikethemodernbicycle,though,

    becauseitsbackwheelwassubstantiallylargerthanitsrontwheel.Although

    Macmillansbicyclescouldberiddeneasily,theywereneverproducedinlarge

    numbers.

    In1861,FrenchmanPierreMichauxandhisbrotherErnestinventedabicyclewith

    animprovedpedalmechanism.TheycalledtheirbicycleaVELOCIPEDE,butmostpeople

    calledita“boneshakerbecauseotheeectothewoodandironrame.Despite

    theimpolitenickname,theVELOCIPEDEwasahit.Ateraewyears,theMichauxamily

    wasmakinghundredsothemachinesannually,mostlyorun-seekingyoungpeople.

    Tenyearslater,JamesStarley,anEnglishinventor,madeseveralinnovations

    thatrevolutionizedbicycledesign.Hemadetherontwheelmanytimeslargerthan

    thebackwheel,putagearonthepedalstomakethebicyclemoreeicient,and

    lightenedthewheelsbyusingwirespokes.Althoughthisbicyclewasmuchlighter

    andlesstiringtoride,itwasstillclumsy,extremelytop-heavy,andriddenmostly

    orentertainment.

    Itwasntuntil1874thattheirsttrulymodernbicycleappearedonthescene.
