DuplicatingLathe:Duplicating(ortracer)lathesaredesignedtoproduceduplicate

partsbysemiautomaticmeans.Exceptftape-controlledlathes(discussedinChapter

21),theoperatorisrequiredtoloadandunloadtheworkpiecesandtostartthe

automaticoperationforeachcuttingcycle.Onesingle-pointcuttingtoolisused.

Straight,tapered,andcontouredturnedorfacedsurfacesandboredholesare

repetitivelyproducedbythemotionofastylusasitfollowstheoutlineofalow-cost

template.Thetemplateisgenerallymountedattherearofthemachine.The

movementsofthestylusareactuatedbymechanical,air,hydraulic,orelectrical

methods.Workmaybeheldbetweencentersorchucked.Duplicatingortracer

attachmentsaregenerallyfactory-installedonastandardenginelathe,although

specialmachinesarealsoavailable.

TurretLathe:Turretlathesaresemiautomaticmachinetoolswhichcanproduceparts

ingreaterquantities,toclosertolerances,faster,andasaresultmoreeconomically

thanispossiblebyconventionalenginelathes.Unliketheenginelathe,theturretlathe

isnotrestrictedtoasinglecuttingtool.Aleadingadvantageisthatseveraloperations

maybeperformedonaworkpaceatagiventime.Itshouldbenoted,however,that

therangeandtypesofturretlatheoperationsareessentiallythesameasthose

associatedwiththeenginelathe.
