    anniversaryofourfounding,reachednewrecordsforrevenueandoperatingincome,andlaidthefoundationforfuturegrowth

    throughkeychangesinourorganizationalstructureandleadership.Fueledbystrongdemandfornewandexistingproducts,our

    revenuein2006grewby$4.49billion,an11percentincrease,to$44.28billion.Operatingincomereachedarecord$16.47

    billion.Wealsoreturned$23billiontoshareholdersthroughdividendsandbyrepurchasingourstock.

    ThepastyearsawthesuccessfullaunchofmajorproductsincludingXbox360™,Microsoft®SQLServer™2005,VisualStudio®

    2005,MicrosoftDynamics™CRM3.0,andBizTalk®Server2006.Meanwhile,wecontinuedtoprepareforthemostimportant

    seriesofproductreleasesinMicrosofthistoryaswereadiedWindowsVista™,the2007MicrosoftOfficesystem,andExchange

    Server2007forlaunchin2007.

    WealsostrengthenedourcommitmenttoInternetservicesasweunveiledWindowsLive™andOfficeLive,ourtwoInternet-

    basedsoftwareservicesofferings.Throughouttheyear,werolledoutnewWindowsLiveandOfficeLiveservicesandwe

    continuetoinvestinthedevelopmentofnewtechnologiesandproductsthatwillhelpensurethatwearealeaderinthe

    Internetservicesrevolution.

    During2006,wemaintainedourfocusonresearchanddevelopment,investing$6.6billion—morethananyothercompanyin

    ourindustry.PastinvestmentinRDpaidoffintheformofnewproductsandtechnologiesthatarehelpingusredefinethenext

    generationofinformationtechnology.Alongtheway,wereceivedour5,000thpatent.
