AsglobalclimatetargetssuchasthoseestablishedbytheParisAgreementloomcloser,thebeverage
industryisundermountingpressuretotranslateits
sustainabilitycommitmentsintomeasurableemissionsreductions.Althoughmanycompanieshavepubliclydeclaredambitiousnetzerogoalsfor2030and2050,ourlatestresearchrevealsthattheindustryisfalling
shortofthepacerequiredtomeetthem.
Toshedlightonthegapbetweenambitionandaction,wecombinedadeep-diveemissionsanalysiswitha
targetedsurveyofchiefsustainabilityofficers(CSOs)fromleadinginternationalbeveragecompanies.
Together,thisresearchprovidesacomprehensive
viewofwheretheindustrystandsintermsofboth
decarbonizationoutcomesandthestrategicmethodsbeingusedtoaccelerateprogress.
Trackingthecarbonfootprint:beverageindustryemissions
Inourpreviousreport,webegantrackingthe
emissionsperformanceofbeveragecompaniesandidentifiedaclearcalltoaction:theindustryneeded
toaccelerateitsdecarbonizationeffortstostayon
coursefornetzero.Thisyear’sanalysis,basedon2023data,showsencouragingsignsofprogressbutalso
confirmsthataccelerationiscrucialtoreachnetzero.
Comparedwithour2021projections,theindustryhasachieveda10percentagepointimprovement,whichisastepintherightdirection(seefigure1).However,currenteffortstranslateintoa-1.7percentcompoundannualreductionthrough2050,whichstillfallsshortofthe-7.8percentannualreductionneededtoalignwiththe1.5°Cpathway.
Ifthispacecontinues,emissionsin2030willbe
about3percentabovethetargetof1.25billiontons.Lookingfartherahead,2050emissionsareprojectedat0.92billiontons
