Understandinghowinclusivetradeishasbecomeincreasinglyrelevantascountriesaimtopromoteequitableeconomicoutcomes.Thisnoteproposesamethodtoevaluatehowinclusiveacountry’sexportsarebyconsideringkeyeconomicdimensions.Theproposedindicatorsallowforcomparisonsacrosscountriesandovertime,providinginsightsintohowacountry’stradecompositionrelatestobroadereconomicoutcomes,includingincomegrowthandsocialequity.

BuildingonHausmann,Hwang,andRodrik(2007),thistechnicalnotepresentsa

methodologytoestimatetheinclusivenessofanexportproductacrossthreeeconomicdimensions:incomeequality,gender

equality,andlabourmarketformality.

Usingthisproduct-levelmeasure,the

noteconstructsacountry-levelexport

inclusivenessindexbycalculatingthe

export-weightedaverageofproduct

inclusivenessscores.Finally,itexaminestherelationshipbetweenexportinclusiveness

andGDPpercapitagrowth,findingthata1percentincreaseinexportinclusiveness—controllingfortotalexportvalueanda

measureofoverallnationalinclusiveness—isassociatedwitha0.21percent

increaseinGDPpercapitagrowth.
