Theoriginsoftheword‘desertification’aremostcommonlyattributedtoFrenchbotanistAndréAubréville’s1949workonAfricanrainforests,thoughastudyarguesthatitmayevenbetracedbacktothe19th-centuryFrenchcolonialNorthAfrica.ThephenomenonhasexistedinAfricaforthousandsofyearsandisn’tnew.However,withsocietiesdevelopingandhumanactivitiesrising,desertificationhasworsenedconsiderablyinrecentdecades.

Africaishometooneoftheworld’smostfamousdeserts,theSahara,whichisgrowingatarateof48kilometresperyear.Desertificationandtheexpansionofdesertswerenotinitiallyprimarilyduetohuman-inducedclimatechange,liketheyarenowadays.Theworld’sgreatestdesertsformedthroughnaturalprocessesinteractingovermanyyears,suchastheevaporationofwater,upwardwinds,thedescentofwarmair,andlowhumidity.

However,humanactivityhasmorerecentlycometoeithergroworshrinkthesedeserts.Toputhumancontributionsintoperspective,theSaharahasbeengrowingrapidlysincethe1920s,covering10%morelandthanitusedto,accordingtoastudybyNationalScienceFoundation-fundedscientistsattheUniversityofMaryland.Themodernstudyofdesertificationthatwearefamiliarwithtoday,whichconsidersclimatechange,emergedfromstudyingthe1980sdroughtintheSahelregion,themostvulnerableregiononthecontinent.Itisa3,000-milestretchoflandthatincludestencountiesandisunderconstantstressduetofrequentdroughts,soilerosion,andpopulationgrowth,whichhasincreasedlogging,illegalfarming,andlandclearingforhousing.

The1980sdroughtisnotthefirsthuman-inducedeventthataffectedtheSahelregion.Thedeserthashistoricallyexperiencedalongseriesofdroughts,butoneofthemostsignificantistheSaheliandroughtandfamineof1968.
