Asaregiongrapplingwithrapidpopulationandeconomicgrowth,theAssociationofSoutheastAsianNations(ASEAN)requiresasignificantamountofenergytofueldevelopment.Inthe8thASEANEnergyOutlook,theASEANCentreforEnergyprojectsthatenergydemandwillincreasealmostthreefoldby2050from2022levels,reachingupto1,108milliontonnesofoilequivalent,andwillstillbedominatedbyoil,gas,andcoal,resultinginasignificantamountofenergy-relatedgreenhousegas(GHG)emissions.

WithintheGHGemissionsmix,methanehasrisentoprominenceasthesecond-largestGHGcontributingtoglobalwarming,withaglobalwarmingpotentialof84timesmorethancarbondioxideovera20-yearperiod.Asseveralkeyoilandgasproducersarelocatedwithintheregion,ASEANemitted0.32milliontonnes(Mt)ofmethanein2023,equivalenttotheeffectof9Mtofcarbondioxide.

Whilethereisregionalacknowledgementthatreducingmethaneemissionsfromoilandgasproductionisaquickwinthatcanbeaccomplishedatanetnegativecost,ASEANfacesseveralchallengesinmethanemanagement.Inviewofthis,onbehalfoftheCentreforEnergy,IampleasedtosharethisMethaneManagementRoadmapforOilandGasinASEAN,alongwiththeASEANCouncilonPetroleum(ASCOPE)andtheWorldB
