1.Background

Amidthedualcrisesofglobalclimatechangeandbiodiversityloss,thereisanurgent

needfortheagriculturalsectortotransition

towardssustainability.Ononehand,the

agriculturalsectorishighlydependent

onnaturalresourcessuchaslandand

water,andtheirassociatedservices,

makingitparticularlyvulnerabletothe

impactsofclimatechangeandbiodiversitydegradation.1Datarevealsthatoverthepastthreedecades,disastershaveresultedin

globalcropandlivestockproductionlossesofapproximatelyUSD3.8trillion,equivalent

to5%oftheglobalagriculturalGDP.2Ontheotherhand,agriculturalactivitiesarea

majorsourceofgreenhousegasemissionsandakeydriverofecosystemdegradation.

Globally,emissionsfromAgriculture,ForestryandOtherLandUse(AFOLU)accountfor

about21%oftotalannualanthropogenicGHGemissions.3Theagriculturallandexpansion

hascausednearly90%ofglobaldeforestation,furtherdiminishingthecarbonsinkcapacityofglobalforestsandbiodiversity.Inthiscontext,sustainableagriculturalvaluechainhas

beenintroduced4,whichreferstoabusiness

networkthatconnectsfarmers,corporations,andfinancialinstitutionsbyintegrating

technologicalandinstitutionalreformsand

coordinatingproduction,processing,storage,transportandlogistics,marketingandsales,aswellasconsumptionandrecycling,toachieve

thesynergyofecologicalintegrity,economicresilience,andsocialinclusivity.

Global,regionalandnationalinitiativesandregulatorypoliciescombatingforestlossandlanddegradationarebecomingincreasinglystringent.114countries,

includingChinaandBrazil,havesignedtheGlasgowLeadersDeclarationonForests

andLandUse,pledgingt
