inthis,acaseofclosingthebarndoorafterthehorseshaveescaped

—withtheeducatedthemselvesridingonthem.

Certainlypeopledonotseemlessinterestedinsuccessanditssigns

placenamesandnamebrandsmaychange,butsuchitemsdonotseemless

indemandtodaythanadecadeortwoyearsago.Whathashappenedisthat

peoplecannotconfessfullytotheirdreams,aseasilyandopenlyasonce

theycould,lesttheybethoughtpushing,acquisitiveandvulgar.Instead,

wearetreatedtofinehypocriticalspectacles,whichnowmorethanever

seeminamplesupply:thecriticofAmericanmaterialismwitha

Southamptonsummerhome;thepublisherofradicalbookswhotakeshis

mealsinthree-starrestaurants;thejournalistadvocatingparticipatory

democracyinallphasesoflife,whoseownchildrenareenrolledinprivate

schools.Forsuchpeopleandmanymoreperhapsnotsoexceptional,the

properformulationis,“Succeedatallcostsbutavoidappearing

ambitious.”

Theattacksonambitionaremanyandcomefromvariousangles;itspublic

defendersarefewandunimpressive,wheretheyarenotextremely
