HongKong(CNN)?--Authoritieshavekilledalmost5,000dogsinoneChinesecityafterrabieswasblamedforthedeathoffivepeople,Chinasofficial?Xinhuanewsagency?reportedonSunday.

MunicipalauthoritiesinBaoshan,inthesouthwesternprovinceofYunnan,culled4,900dogsandvaccinated100,000initsanti-rabiescampaign,Xinhuareported.

ThereportsaidthatfourpeoplediedfromrabiesinAugustandoneinJulyfollowingdogbites.

Rabiesoutbreakshadbeenrelativelyrareinthepastfiveyears,Xinhuasaid.In2006,atleast16peoplediedofthediseaseintheeasternprovinceofShandong.

Chinaoftenordersstraydogstobeculledinanefforttopreventoutbreaksofrabiesbut,asdogownershiphasbecomemorepopularinaffluentareas,some?animalactivistshavedecriedthepractice,callingforanimalstobevaccinatedorsterilizedtokeepdognumbersdown.

Accordingtothe?WorldHealthOrganization,rabiesisavirusthatspreadstohumanthroughclosecontactfromanimals,usuallyadeepbiteorscratch.Itspreadsthroughthecentralnervoussystem,leadingtofatalinflammationofthebrainandspinalcord.

Effectivetreatmentwithacourseofvaccinescanpreventtheonsetofsymptomsanddeath.
