FieldManagement.Withtheadventof“smart”fielddevices,awealthofinformationcanbeprovided

concerningfielddevicesthathaswasnotpreviouslyavailable.Thisinformationprovidesdataonthe

healthofadevice,itsconfigurationparameters,materialsofconstruction,etc.Allthisinformation

mustbepresentedtotheuser,andanyapplicationsusingit,inaconsistentmanner.

ProcessManagement.TheinstallationofDistributedControlSystems(DCS)andSCADAsystemsto

monitorandcontrolmanufacturingprocessesmakesdataavailableelectronicallywhichhadbeen

heredmanually.

BusinessManagement.Benefitscanbegainedbyinstallingthecontrolsystems.Thisisaccomplished

byintegratingtheinformationcollectedfromtheprocessintothebusinesssystemsmanagingthe

financialaspectsofthemanufacturingprocess.Providingthisinformationinaconsistentmannerto

clientapplicationsminimizestheeffortrequiredtoprovidethisintegration.

Todothesethingseffectively,manufacturersneedtoaccessdatafromthentfloorandintegrateit

intotheirexistingbusinesssystems.Manufacturersmustbeabletoutilizeofftheshelftools(SCADA
