TheFederalInformationProcessingStandardsPublicationSeriesoftheNationalInstituteofStandardsandTechnology(NIST)istheofficialseriesofpublicationsrelatingtostandardsandguidelinesadoptedandpromulgatedundertheprovisionsofSection5131oftheInformationTechnologyManagementReformActof1996(PublicLaw104-106)andtheFederalInformationSecurityManagementActof2002(PublicLaw107-347).ThesemandateshavegiventheSecretaryofCommerceandNISTimportantresponsibilitiesforimprovingtheutilizationandmanagementofcomputerandrelatedtelecommunicationssystemsinthefederalgovernment.TheNIST,throughitsInformationTechnologyLaboratory,providesleadership,technicalguidance,andcoordinationofgovernmenteffortsinthedevelopmentofstandardsandguidelinesintheseareas.
