Introduction

Inrecentyears,therehasbeenaproliferationofnewtermsinrelationtomalariainthescientificliterature,themediaandtechnicalreportsandalsooftermswithnewormodifieduseandmeaning.Thesechangesstemfromrenewedglobalinterest

inmalariaeliminationanderadication,increasingaccesstoscientificandtechnicalinformationandfastertranslationofresearchfindingsintoevidence-basedpolicies.Thisproliferationhasraisedcertaindifficulties:

?Somenewtermsareusedinseveraldiferentways.

?Severalsimilartermshavethesamemeaning.

?Sometermsusedtodescribemalariainterventionshavediferentmeaningsinotherpublichealthprogrammes.

Thesituationisgeneratingincreasingconfusionandmisunderstanding,notonly

inthescientificcommunityandfundingagenciesbutalsoamongpublichealth

officialsresponsibleformalariaprogrammesandpolicy-makersinmalaria-endemiccountries.WHOhasperiodicallyreviewedtheterminologyofmalaria;however,the

latestofficialpublicationonthistopicdatesbackto1963(1).SeveralWorldHealth

Organization(WHO)publicationsinthepast10yearshaveincludedglossariesof

termsusedinmalariasurveillance,controlandelimination;however,therehasbeenonlyonecomprehensivereviewoftheterminologyofmalariasincetheworkofthedraftingcommitteein1963.

OntheadviceoftheMalariaPolicyAdvisoryCommittee(nowtheMalariaPolicy

AdvisoryGroup)atitsseventhbiannualmeetinginMarch2015,theWHOGlobal

MalariaProgrammeSecretariatdecidedtoupdatetheWHOterminologyofmalariaasaglossary.
