1.Scope

1.1Thismethodcoverstherequirementsfortheabsolute

calibrationofacousticemission(AE)sensors.Thecalibration

yieldsthefrequencyresponseofatransducertowaves,ata

surface,ofthetypenormallyencounteredinacousticemission

work.Thetransducervoltageresponseisdeterminedatdis-

cretefrequencyintervalsofapproximately10kHzupto1

MHz.Theinputisagivenwell-establisheddynamicdisplace-

mentnormaltothemountingsurface.Theunitsofthe

calibrationareoutputvoltageperunitmechanicalinput(dis-

placement,velocity,oracceleration).

1.2Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthe

safetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itisthe

responsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-

priatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplica-

bilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.

1—Thestatedaccuracyappliesonlyifthetransferstandard

returnstoquiescence,followingthetransientinput,beforeanywave

re?ectedfromtheboundaryofthecalibrationblockreturnstothetransfer

standard(;100μs).Forlowfrequencieswithperiodsontheorderofthe

timewindow,thisconditionisproblematicaltoprove.

4.2ApplicationsSensors—Thismethodmayalsobeused

forthecalibrationofAEsensorsforuseinnondestructive

evaluation.Someofthesesensorsarelesswellbehavedthan

devicessuitableforatransferstandard.Thestatedaccuracyfor

suchdevices
