1.Scope

NOTE2—Factorsincludingtechniques,equipment,typesofmaterial,

andoperatorvariableswillresultinvariationsinabsolutevelocity

readings,sometimesbyasmuchas5%.Relativeresultswithasingle

combinationoftheabovefactorscanbeexpectedtobemuchmore

accurate(probablywithina1%tolerance).

1.1Thispracticecoversatestprocedureformeasuring

ultrasonicvelocitiesinmaterialswithconventionalultrasonic

pulseecho?awdetectionequipmentinwhichresultsare

displayedinanA-scandisplay.Thispracticedescribesa

methodwherebyunknownultrasonicvelocitiesinamaterial

samplearedeterminedbycomparativemeasurementsusinga

referencematerialwhoseultrasonicvelocitiesareaccurately

known.

1.2Thisprocedureisintendedforsolidmaterials5mm[0.2

in.]thickorgreater.Thesurfacesnormaltothedirectionof

energypropagationshallbeparalleltoatleast63°.Surface

?nishforvelocitymeasurementsshallbe3.2μm[125μin.]rms

orsmoother.
