StanfordSupplyHer,astudentgroupsupportingwomen’shealththroughart,hostedaneventinpartnershipwithUnitedtoBeatMalaria(UBM)toencouragefundingformalariaprevention,treatmentandresearchinitiativeswhiletablingatWhitePlazalastMonday.“Knowingthatmalariaisespeciallydangeroustopregnantindividualsandchildrenmakesadvocacyformalariafundingandresearchessentialforourmission,”saidBista.

“WeintheU.S.needtobeawareoftheimpactofglobalwarmingonmalariabecauselessdevelopedcountriesinotherpartsoftheworldaremoreheavilyaffectedbyouremissions,”Bistasaid.Lastyear,theU.S.experienceditsfirstlocaloutbreaksofmalariasince2003.Infectiousdiseaseexpertshavewarnedthatclimatechangewillspreadmalariaandotherdiseasescarriedbymosquitoestoareasthatwereoncefreeofmalaria.

Thissummer,afterdiscoveringtheworkofUBM,aglobalgrassrootscampaignoftheUNFoundation,Bistametwithhercongressional(国会的)representativestoadvocateformalariatreatmentandresearch.Tosupportcontinuedfundingforglobalmalariaprograms,BistawrotetoofficialsinCongress.“It’seasyforpeopletofeelliketheyarepowerlesswithissuesasbigasmalaria.Butanypersoncangiveinputtotheirdecisionmakersonissuesasbigasthese,”wroteMacganCross,asenioradvocateatUBM.“Bysendingmessagestoyourelectedofficialsinsupportofglobalhealthfunding,youaremakingsureyourvoiceisheard.”
