Aspects of Applied Biology 66, 2002 International Advances in Pesticide Application International Standards and their Impact on Pesticide Application By A HERBST and H GANZELMEIER Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, Division Application Techniques, Messeweg 11/12, D-38104 Braunschweig, Germany Summary The growing world trade requires uniform technical regulations, for instance concerning the performance of pesticide sprayers. This also includes common guidelines for testing application techniques. European and international standards help to ensure a high level of state of the art of sprayers and lead to uniform criteria for the evaluation of spraying systems concerning working quality, operator safety and environmental protection. International and European standardisation is conducted by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The Technical Committee (TC) 23/Subcommittee (SC) 6 belonging to ISO deals mainly with test methods for sprayers while TC 144/Working Group (WG) 3 of CEN works on requirements and performance limits. European standard EN 907 is the main standard for sprayers with regard to operator safety. In accordance with the EU Machinery Directive 89/392 EEC it specifies safety requirements and their verification for the design and construction of sprayers for pesticides and liquid fertilisers. Concerning environmental protection, EN 12761 takes a key position. It defines requirements on the function of all subassemblies of the sprayer in order to minimise environmental hazards. A number of ISO standards for the testing of sprayers are under development, which all contribute to a high level of state of the art of sprayers. Although the application of international standards is voluntary in general, they do have the character of a guideline, and therefore a certain influence on the design and construction of sprayers.
