Among Thomas Hardy’s novels, Tess of the D’Urbervilles can be regarded as one of his most famous novels and the summit of his realism. It is more than a story about a woman whose tragedy makes people feel the beauty through Hardy’s artistic creation and manifests the intension of human tragedies of different status. Tess’s tragedy exposes the prudery and hypocrisy of Victorian society and the injustice of society’s attitude to women. Tess of the D’Urbervilles represents the forces that control the lives of the humans and discusses the love among the three characters. So it is Tess’s suffering from her frustration in love and unalterable love that lead to her tragedy. Based on these, this article analyzes the different views on love between man and woman and what causes their different views. A. Introduction to the Author? Thomas Hardy, whose novel has high reputation in the world, is an English realistic novelist in the 19th century. He was born in Dorset on June2,1840, in the centre of the Wessex country which later figured in his works. In 1862 he left for London to continue his work as an architect. Five years later, he came back to Dorset because of his poor health, and began his first novel, The Poor Man and the Lady. In 1878, The Return of the Native appeared and this established his reputation as a writer. Over the next three years he published The Mayor of Casterbridge(1886), The Woodlanders(1887) and his first collection of short stories,“ Wessex Tales”(1888). And his novels culminated with the two greatest, Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. However, The Dynasts, published in three parts in 1903,1906 and 1908, is the capstone of his career. Hardy’s novels have deep pessimistic color. B. Introduction to the Novel? In Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Hardy describes the tragic fate of a poor girl.
